This book is critical for anyone considering divorce, going through a divorce, or recently divorced. She covers the gamut of topics–from how to help yourself rediscover your identity as an individual, how to work toward healing from the trauma of divorce (even the best ones are still emotionally traumatic), how to navigate the legal process while protecting your interests (and children), and how to recognize and defend yourself against post-separation abuse. If you are married to or divorcing/divorced from someone with abusive/narcissistic tendencies, you MUST read this book!! They do not fight fair, and they will seek to destroy you–your self-esteem, your reputation, your relationships, and even your career. You need to know what you are up against and also what weapons are at your disposal.
My favorite part of the book is the DARVO technique–I pray that every attorney and judge in the nation (better yet, the WORLD) reads this! Too many abusers get away with continued, horrific abuse because of this manipulation tactic that works against law enforcement, child protective agencies, and the legal justice system. Unless you learn to recognize it, child abuse will continue unfettered. If you hold any position of power, educate yourselves! I’m a lawyer, but I have no experience with divorce. My legal experience is in military law, contracts, mergers and acquisitions, and teaching law-MBA joint degree students. I read every word of this book because it was filled with compelling narratives, solid practical legal advice, wisdom and faith. It was written to help women through the terror and anguish of divorce and, to borrow a phrase, it “crushes” that topic, arming the reader with needed skills. But this book will find an even wider audience with all types of family counselors, pastors, social workers and financial advisors. For anyone practicing or teaching law there are excellent sections on preparing documentation, witnesses, and financial statements along with advice on how to obtain and present them. This isn’t dry legal theory; it is a means of preparing for winning a legal battle.
